Spring Break Activity: Homemade Magic Shell Chocolate Sauce AND Chocolate Covered Frozen Banana Bites

This post is for your little chef. It is so easy and healthy to make your own ‘Magic Shell’ chocolate sauce you will never go back to buying the expensive, chemical laden stuff again. And I have included a BONUS recipe for making chocolate covered frozen banana bites that your family will just devour. The best part of these recipes is that they are totally kid friendly because you only need a microwave and a freezer to make both of these treats!

Homemade Magic Shell Chocolate Sauce

Homemade Magic Shell Chocolate Sauce

Ingredients:

  • Coconut Oil (We used unrefined extra virgin—but use what you like and can find.)
  • 1, 7oz bar of 85% dark chocolate (or whatever % you like–the darker the more healthy your recipe will be.)
  • 3 medium ripe bananas (firm but not green)
  • toothpicks
  • small glass jar with lid (we used an old jelly jar)

Directions for Homemade Magic Shell Chocolate

First break the chocolate bar into small bits. Then pour the bits of chocolate into your small jar. Scoop 2 heaping tablespoons of coconut oil and put them into your jar with the chocolate. Cover the jar with a paper towel and microwave the chocolate and coconut oil for 1min. Stir. If it is not melted, microwave in 30 sec intervals until the mixture is smooth and runny. (see picture below) This chocolate sauce is shelf safe for a few weeks. (If it lasts that long.) If it becomes hard, just microwave it for 30 seconds and stir until smooth. Do not store in the refrigerator.

Directions for Chocolate Covered Frozen Banana Bites

Cut 3 bananas into bite sized circles and poke a toothpick into the center of each slice. Freeze the banana bites on a parchment (or silpat) lined cookie sheet for at least 1 hour. After an hour pull the frozen banana bites out of the freezer and carefully dip each one into the melted magic shell sauce (from above) and place back onto the cookie sheet. After all of the banana bites are covered in chocolate refreeze them until ready to serve. Serve frozen. If there are any left over you can store them in a covered container for a month or more–they never last more than a few days here so I am not sure how long they will keep in the freezer. 😉
